6 x most frequently used Driving Routines
Using these driving routines is important not only for safety reasons, but crucial to passing the driving test.
1) DSSSM routine
- Also known as Cockpit drill
- Doors, Seat, Steering, Seatbelt and Mirrors (in this order)
2) POM routine
- Prepare
- Gear [D-drive / R-Reverse / L-Low]
- Handbrake off
- Observe
- 6-point check
- Move
- Signal
- Drive off
3) MSM routine
- Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre
4) SCALP routine
- Parking in a Safe, Convenient, And Legal Position

5) MSPSL routine
- Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed and Look
- Most frequently used routine.
- Used for approaching all junctions, including roundabouts and traffic lights.
6) LADA routine
- Look, Assess, Decide, Act
- (Used for judging speed and distance of oncoming traffic)
- Helps learner drivers to assess traffic and potential hazards just before traffic systems and deciding when it’s safe to go or to stay.
- Ask yourself…. “If I was a pedestrian would I go?”
7) SSSS (four S’s)
- Never pull out on another vehicle and make the driver: Slow down, Stop, Swerve or Swear
